Who Does Home Infusion?
The answer to this question depends on the medication. There are some medications for which home infusion is not an option, and there are some medications requiring multiple doses per day that must be done by home infusion. Most infusions that are not antibiotics are done in the infusion center. Some patients getting daily IV antibiotic infusions can do home infusions. Some patients come to the infusion center because they are not able to self-administer. It is hard to predict if there is a cost advantage to doing home infusions; it depends on the medication and the patient’s insurance. Sometimes it is less expensive to have the IV antibiotic infusions done at home, and sometimes it is less expensive to go to the infusion center.
